Day 1 - Getting to Washington DC
August 5, 2010

Day

2

So we wake up at 4.00 a.m. and outside there’s a thunderstorm, just to make things easier: you know, after a four hours sleep and with all our luggage, a heavy rain is all we need. We say goodbye to our families and at Linate airport we find two friends of ours waiting to depart for St. Petersburg, a place that sooner or later we’ll visit. Our flights is on time and everything goes smoothly, both our planes are all right, the food is good and there’s plenty of it, the movie collection is big and up to date. At Heathrow, Paolo commits one terrible mistake, that will cause him to be mistaken for a terrorist: he took a picture of the security controls, and a very nice lady rushed towards him shouting to immediately delete that picture.UUh! During our flight over the Atlantic Ocean, Paolo manages to sleep, while Diego’s eyes are very dry because of the air conditioner, so he watches some Titanic scenes to resolve the problem. Once we land, we go through American security checks (again) and the ridiculous and a bit indiscreet interogatories.

They want to know everything about our trip and ourselves, but as a matter of fact, they’re nice officers and seems to really enjoy their tedious work. Luckily our luggage arrive in one piece. But as we get out of the airport, we found in DC the thunderstorm we hoped to have left behind in Europe, and it’s very hot and humid. Hertz shuttle take us to their headquarters. In the meantime, Paolo manages to leave on board his backpack, but luckily Diego realizes it and get it back before it’s too late. What a hero! We find out, much to our dismay, that we got the old Prius, and it has the color of alien vomit, between gray and green. But no matter, we’re finally on the road! But not for long, as our first stop is a few miles away, the Smithsonian museum near Dulles airport, where we see the shuttle Enterprise. Due to the bad weather and the heavy traffic, we arrive at the hotel at 7.30 pm. We take a walk to the White House, and we find out that Washington is a luxuriant swamp, very hot and very  humid, full of fireflies, crickets, frogs, squirrels, ducks and dragonflies. At 10.0
0, after an almost 24 hours day, we go back to the hotel, where we fall asleep after a shower.
